String Theory

In collaboration with Chiao Ho and Petrula Vrontikis

Our initial ideas were to try to initiate behavior by creating real or perceived barriers. This idea was quickly changed to something that provided an invitation to participate in an out of the ordinary experience. The paths we created were gentile and easy to follow. About ½ of the people who walked on the bridge participated in some, or all, of our defined path.

We liked the gentle participatory nature of the project as it evolved. People were not forced to do anything. Because of this attribute, the aesthetic quality of the experience was enhanced.

If we were to have gone on to next steps with this project, we might have tried different ways of defining the path using lighting at night, or creating an experience that clearly stated the expenditure of time that it would take to want a bit differently at that moment.
